There’s so much more to Corfu than its picturesque Old Town, even if you cannot help feeling awe each time you roam its cobbled streets. Corfu’s past is long and diverse and very rich in cultural terms, showing influences from all its different periods of occupation. And much of this history is still reflected in the island’s present, either in its architecture or in the form of monuments and sights that have survived through time, reminiscent of Corfu’s glorious past. Here is a rundown of only some of Corfu’s highlight historic sites and monuments that you should definitely include in your sightseeing.

Old Fortress
This stunning example of Venetian fortification stands on a rocky peninsula and once enclosed the entire medieval town that used to rest on it. Today you can climb up to the imposing citadel, which constitutes a true Corfiot landmark, and enjoy the breathtaking views across the sea and the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town.

Pontikonisi
The small verdant islet is Corfu’s trademark and probably owes its name (Mouse Island) to its shape. It is located near Kanoni from where you can catch the boat to reach it. Pontikonisi is carpeted with cypress trees and features a Byzantine church that you can visit.

Achilleion
Achilleion is one of the most stunning out of Corfu’s popular landmarks. It was built by Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the troubled royal who deeply loved and admired Greece and especially cherished Corfu. The neoclassical palace is of unique beauty, with its landscaped gardens and lavish architecture and it is a “must” of any sightseeing tour.

Angelokastro
Perched on one of the highest and most precipitous points of the rocky northwestern coastline, Angelokastro is a byzantine castle overseeing a vast area to the North of Corfu, all the way to the mountains of mainland Greece. It is located close to Paleokastritsa and is considered to be one of the most impressive fortifications found on the island.

Mon Repos
This plush estate used to be the summer residence of the former royal family of Greece. It is located south of Corfu town, in the abundantly verdant forest of Palaiopolis and today it serves as a museum. Visiting Mon Repos is worth your while not only for its value as a monument but also for the nice walk in the forest you will take to reach it.
