Benitses is a lively, cosmopolitan resort, where every traveler is bound to find something to suit their taste. Tucked between the coastline and the verdant mountain, Benitses is known to rest within an imposing and unspoiled natural setting, despite the vast tourist activity and development of the 70s and 80s. The resort nestles around two natural coves, boasting beaches mixing sand and pebbles, into a wooded area. The old village itself has lost none of its picturesque charm and a visit there will expose you to the idyllic Greek character of a traditional Corfiot fishing village. Location
Benitses is located 13km south of Corfu town and about 9km from the airport. Its positioning, in the middle of the island is ideal for accessing Corfu town but also other equally inviting resorts; the gorgeous sandy beaches in southern Corfu, as well as the western part of the island. Also, since it is surrounded by lush hills sweeping gently all the way down to the sea, Benitses offers both mountain and sea landscapes, for those who want to enjoy both during their holiday.
Demographics
This resort is perfect for to those who seek for a lively destination, close to Corfu town and pristine beaches of southern and western Corfu. It is best suited to couples, but young children are also welcome, as the beaches here are safe for them to enjoy.
Transport
You can easily reach Benitses from Corfu town, or the airport, using either a car, following the main coastal road to the south, or public transport. Buses run from Corfu town all the way to Benitses quite frequently during the summer months. A boat can also be hired from the marina of Benitses to Corfu town.
Things to do
Benitses is known as a vibrant destination, with a rich selection of tourist facilities and choices for dining and going out. The traditional settlement is quiet and picturesque though, if you enjoy this kind of setting, and the mountains surrounding the resort hide small secluded churches. This natural positioning offers great opportunities for hiking or bike rides through the lush hills in one of the trails crossing them. The stunning coastal views will definitely reward the climb. As for the actual resort itself, the beaches are equipped with all the necessary facilities, such as umbrellas and sun beds, and offer a great selection of water sport activities. Nightlife in Benitses is mostly low-key so you can enjoy a chill night-out. You will find excellent choices for food and dining out in one of the area’s restaurants and traditional taverns, so do not hesitate to savor local delicacies and fresh fish.
Sightseeing
Staying in Benitses you cannot miss a chance to visit the Achilleion Palace, the classical summer resort originally constructed for Empress Elizabeth of Austria, located in Gastouri, just 3km from Benitses. While you are here you can also pay a visit to the sea museum, to admire one of the richest collections of shells, corals and other sea fossils in the Mediterranean. Finally, if you are in for some more sightseeing, you can visit the remains of the Roman Villa and its thermal baths, which you will find really close to the main road.
